ELEMENT TWO
A SAFE AND HEALTHY CLIMATE FOR LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT
AIM schools build a safe and healthy school climate by focusing on four
key ideas:
Learning takes place when students feel safe, both physically and emotionally.
In a healthy climate, individual students and teachers are "known" and respected.
AIM schools foster personalization through:
- clusters or houses
- advisory programs
- looping
A safe and healthy school climate is one of decency and respect. AIM schools
ensure that programs and curricula promote effective communication skills,
empathy, and an appreciation of diversity.
"Health is academic." That is, students cannot be active, engaged learners
unless their basic health needs-physical, social, and emotional-are met.
To meet these needs, AIM schools:
- Create a comprehensive health team
- Provide "wrap around" services
- Establish links with community agencies
Using a variety of research-based
strategies best meets the needs of
each student, including English language learners and students with disabilities.
By integrating technology, the arts, service-learning, and cooperative
learning, teachers can help students with diverse learning styles succeed.
