DESIGN ELEMENT THREE

ONGOING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THAT RESULTS IN AN INCLUSIVE AND POWERFUL LEARNING COMMUNITY

Professional development is the key to the change effort. In AIM schools, all teachers are learners and leaders. This means that:

Faculty Inquiry Teams are the cornerstone of professional development and improved teaching and learning.

The primary focus is on teaching for understanding and enhancing student literacy as a vehicle toward that understanding.

Looking at student work is critical to improving student understanding and curriculum effectiveness.

The AIM site developer acts as mentor, facilitator, critical friend, and coach to help build the school's internal capacity by:

  • Creating strong Faculty Inquiry Teams
  • Teaching process and facilitation skills
  • Encouraging ongoing planning, action, and reflection
  • Keeping the focus on continuous improvement
