ELEMENT FOUR
STRONG LINKS BETWEEN FAMILY SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY
AIM schools actively engage parents and community members in support of
student learning. This means that AIM schools draw on community resources
to improve achievement by:
Involving parents in student learning. Research shows that
when parents are involved, students have higher grades and test scores,
more positive attitudes toward school, and better behavior. AIM schools
welcome families and involve parents as:
- decision makers
- teachers
- learners
- evaluators
- mentors
Family centers and family-community liaisons get parents involved and increase
interactions with the community.
Making the community an extension of the classroom. AIM schools
conduct a Community Assets Inventory to identify local resources such as:
- nearby colleges and universities
- social service agencies
- youth-serving organizations
- museums and libraries
- local houses of worship
- business and industry partners
AIM
schools take advantage of these resources to support student learning
and development, professional development, and the overall school improvement
efforts.
