IMPLEMENTATION BENCHMARKS
DESIGN ELEMENT 5

COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP

Phase One

Phase Two

Phase Three

* * *

Phase One
The school develops a shared vision of a high-performing middle-grades school that drives the change process.

The school creates a School Leadership Team that meets monthly to examine data, work with faculty to establish goals, and monitor progress in meeting benchmarks.

The district identifies key district staff members that meet with the School Leadership Team regularly to support the work of the school.

The School Leadership Team evaluates available professional development and makes sure that the schedule allows sufficient time for Faculty Inquiry Teams to meet.

Phase Two
The School Leadership Team assesses the professional development needs of the faculty, examines barriers to change, and strategically plans to overcome barriers to achieving the vision.

The School Leadership Team collects, analyzes, and uses data as a basis for making decisions.

The School Leadership Team meets regularly with the District Leadership Team to discuss their shared vision and garner support for the strategic plan.

The School and District Leadership team begin offering focused and intensive professional development aligned with the school improvement plan.

Phase Three
Leadership is shared by stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

The school holds itself accountable for student success and uses self-generated data to identify areas for more intensive improvement. It delineates benchmarks and insists upon evidence and results.

The school intentionally and explicitly reconsiders its vision and practices when data call them into question.

Professional development focuses on improving curriculum, instruction, and assessment so that all students meet high standards.

The school works with colleges and universities to recruit, prepare, and mentor novice and experienced teachers.
